Whether deconstructing Shakespeare or building skateboards in woodshop, OVS Middle School students are immersed in a challenging academic program designed to develop critical thinking, intellectual, and problem solving skills before the transition to high school. Students in grades 6-8 are presented with an integrated course of study in math, science, technology, and engineering. They develop solid writing, research, and reading skills through a literature-based curriculum in language arts and social science classes. They also have the opportunity to pursue a foreign language, Spanish, as well as fine and performing arts.
The focus in Middle School is not just developing academic skills, but also teaching responsibility, good citizenship, and respect for oneself, others and the environment. It is at this stage of their development that Middle School students are given opportunities for independence and personal growth through leadership responsibilities inside and outside the classroom. This includes Student Council, Outdoor Education, Athletics, and Reading Buddies with younger students in the Elementary and Primary divisions.
