June 1 – Ojai Valley School graduated 30 seniors speaking 14 languages from 8 countries who are now headed to top universities around the world. As a group, they earned acceptances to more than 160 colleges and universities, and several of them got into their top-choice schools, including UCLA, UC Berkeley, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of Michigan, Emerson College and more.
“The colleges clearly saw what we know about this group, which is that they want to be challenged and they fully immersed themselves in all aspects of school life,” said Craig Floyd, Head of School at the Upper Campus.
As a class, they took 71 Advanced Placement courses. They all played on sports teams – including the track, cross country and baseball teams that all went to CIF this year. Most seniors joined the cast and crew of the spring musical, Mamma Mia. Several members of the class competed in the Los Angeles Regional Championship as part of the competitive Robotics teams.
Collectively, they also participated in 62 outdoor trips totaling 144 nights, which included the Honors Camping Trip to Utah, river rafting on the Kern River, and the Senior Camping Trip to Big Sur that involved an overnight solo.
They also gave back and contributed to the community.
This was particularly true after the Thomas Fire. Many of these graduating OVS seniors lost their possessions when the girls’ dorm and Science and Technology Center burned. Yet they rallied upon returning to school, painting temporary dorm rooms, assembling furniture, planting landscaping, and helping prepare the campus for the returning students.
“As a school, we want to see our students push beyond limits. We want them to discover their potential and develop the work ethic and confidence to take on any challenges that life may throw their way,” Floyd said. “It’s reassuring to know that many seniors left us having learned those skills.”
Congratulations to all our students and graduates for the completion of a wonderful school year! We look forward to starting the new academic year on August 25-26.
