Carl served for 28 years the Head of School at Upper Campus and retired from that role in June 2017. He now assists with Development and Alumni Relations. Carl grew up at Ojai Valley School, and that has provided him a lifetime of opportunities to apply the OVS wholeness of life philosophy. His father, Robert G. Cooper, was the first headmaster of the Upper School, taking the reins in 1964 after serving as a popular teacher and coach. That was the same year Carl graduated from the Lower Campus, and he followed four years later with a diploma from the Upper Campus.
His years at OVS were filled with sports and studies, camping and a bit of mischief. But they were formative years; time that shaped his belief that learning takes place in many ways and in many places. Whether coaching on the sideline or taking over a class for a teacher, he consistently preached the gospel of character and integrity, of participation and positive contribution.
