Throughout the year, OVS equestrians have the opportunity to participate in events, such as clinics, horse shows, trail rides, cross country training sessions, private lessons, Pony Club certifications and horse camping trips.
In the fall, high school riders enjoy a horse camping trip at Rancho Oso in the Santa Ynez Valley. Middle school riders take the same trip in the spring. Riding in the wilderness empowers students to think for themselves, and it facilitates independence as they work to prepare meals, care for their horses, and set up their camp sites. Dressage and jumping clinics allow riders to develop skills on the flat and over fences.
At the fall camping trip in November 2017, riders spent four days trail riding and camping with their horses in Los Padres National Forest. “It was truly one of the best trips ever; the weather was perfect, the scenery was glorious, the equestrians were all so delighted to spend time with their horses,” Equestrian Director Stephanie Gustafson said. “Everyone happily worked as a team doing all of the regular camping work, as well as the horse-related work. We are looking forward to another trip this spring!” In addition to spring horse camping trips, OVS riders will saddle up for weekend trail rides in February and March.
