Ojai Valley School provides support services to international students who are developing their English language proficiency, and students with learning differences who would benefit from assistance, remediation, and enrichment opportunities.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Ojai Valley School has developed an extensive English as a Second Language program (ESL) for international students whose English language proficiency is still developing. ESL classes are small, providing students with intensive support and guidance. The prime objective of the ESL program is the eventual mainstreaming of students into the regular academic curriculum. ESL students focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing skills, and they develop study skills and learning strategies that will ensure success in the mainstream curriculum. Students will read short stories, plays, novels and learn to interpret literary elements and devices through class discussion and written work. Students meet for two class periods of Language Arts, five days per week, and attend sheltered classes for science and social science. Students are mainstreamed into math, technology, and fine arts courses, and they are expected to fully participate in sports and performing arts at the Lower Campus.
Learning Center
OVS offers support services and accommodations for students with mild to moderate learning differences, such as dyslexia and ADHD. In the elementary and middle school divisions, these services include intensive support for math remediation and the development of reading comprehension and writing skills. We also offer support classes for elementary, middle, and high school students who need to improve their organizational and study skills. These support services vary in terms of fees and instructional time. They are not included in the tuition.
