All Middle School students entering and returning to Ojai Valley School are required to read specific assigned books during the summer.
Summer reading helps develop language skills and general knowledge. More than any other measure students can take, improving reading fluency and developing a habit of reading independently will help increase their prospects for academic success. Additionally, the titles selected for summer 2010 will provide a rich and valuable background for American and world history, topics that are taught in our middle-school social studies curriculum.
Each student will be required to have read the specific novels related to his or her grade-level, as detailed on the Middle School Required Summer Reading List. Students with learning differences that require accommodation can listen to these books in audio format as they read.
These titles have been selected with content, character development, curricular ties, and reading levels in mind. The novels will be discussed in class once the school year begins. If students would like to make notes as they read, they are welcome to do so.
In addition to the required selection, other titles and authors are recommended on our Middle School Recommended Reading List. This list includes many books that are appropriate, depending on a student’s ability and preference. Remember that your local library is a great resource for finding reading material, and you are not required to purchase any of the required texts. If you choose to do so, titles are available in most book stores or can be purchased online.
Many thanks for supporting our program. Have an enjoyable and safe summer!
