“We take an incredibly hands-on, learn-by-doing approach in teaching new journalists how to write. Out of our team of nine journalists this year, eight of them had never written like this before. From the first day of class until the last, we assigned stories to them, we frustrated them, we demanded professionalism and skill, and they did not disappoint. – Avery Colborn (L16, U20), former editor
Student Journalism
Ojai Valley School offers an award-winning Journalism program in which students undertake a broad range of media studies and hone their skills at writing, editing, and design by producing both a print newspaper and a companion website, On The Hill.
Journalism and Advanced Journalism are offered as for-credit interdisciplinary classes. Weekly blogging and stories for the newspaper are geared toward sharpening skills in interviewing, writing, organization, and information analysis. Students are expected to meet the standards of professional publications in accuracy, clarity and proofreading, and several OVS graduates have gone on to pursue journalism degrees, including at the University of Missouri, NYU, and Boston University.
